EUROVISION 2023 | VOYAGER ( BASS-GUITARIST ALEX CANION) – AUSTRALIA : „Life is too short to be disingenuous”

Voyager is a progressive metal band from Perth, Western Australia, formed in 1999. The band has released seven full-length albums. Their seventh full-length studio album, Colours in the Sun, was released worldwide on 1 November 2019 on the French American metal record label Season of Mist They will represent Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with the song „Promise„.

We got the chance to talk with the bass -guitarist of the Voyager band, Alex Canion, about the entire Eurovision 2023 phenomenon and we invite you to a new story-interview taken by Daily Magazine Romania. 

Hello, guys! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to meet you today! How are you feeling as the representatives of Australia in ESC 2023?

1. What does the Eurovision competition really mean to you?

Being involved with Eurovision is a dream come true. I have to pinch myself sometimes thinking about it, especially because growing up I’d never imagined this would’ve been a possibility for a metal band from Western Australia, of all places.

2. What defines you as an artist? And how can you describe yourself in 3 Eurovision songs?

I think humour and sincerity is at the core of everything I do artistically – it needs to be for me to resonate with it, because life is too short to be disingenuous in my opinion.

3. What are your best daily motivations as an artist in ESC?

My motivations are simply to enjoy the ride while we’re on it. We’ve been a band for so long and have endured many ups and downs along the way, so I’m just going to take it all in and enjoy the process. We’ll of course rock the hell out of the stage though, don’t worry about that!

4. What is the story and the message of your song and how much do you find yourself in the song?

Promise is about trying to connect with the good in life and taking a moment to realise that there is hope, kind of like being reassured by family or friends that you can get out of a rough patch. I think anyone can relate to that message. For me though, the opening line „Have you ever done anything like this before?” speaks to the band’s journey to Eurovision.

5. What details can you give us regarding your show on the stage?

You’ll just have to wait and see! I can promise you it’ll be awesome.

6. If you could make a duet or a revamp, what artist and song from ESC would you choose and what would you add?

I really like Finland’s entry – Breaking My Heart by Reiley from this year’s competition. It’d be cool to lay some bass down on that song in some kind of revamp. I’d love to add some more crazy vocal harmonies too. 

7. What song of the other chosen do you like the most?

Queen of Kings by Alessandra has really stuck in my head since I heard it, and I love the slow and stanky feeling of TVORCHI’s song Heart of Steel.

8. Why should people vote for you in Eurovision Song Contest?

I would hope people would vote for us because they can see that we’re a hard-working band that enjoys nothing more than performing on stage together. Winning ESC would essentially help us make music sustainable long-term – which is the dream!

9. What will be next after Eurovision?

We’re going to head back home and do a tour of Australia, then most likely come back to Europe for a headline tour to promote our new album which will be released later in the year.
