EUROVISION 2023 | TEYA & SALENA – AUSTRIA : „For us Eurovision means that one can make it no matter where you come from, what you look like, who you love and what language you speak.”
Teya & Salena are the first female duo to compete for Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest. Twenty-two year old Viennese Teya and twenty-four year old Salena from Styria met each other two years ago, when they participated in the ORF casting show Starmania 21.
For Eurovision 2023, Austrian singers Teya & Salena have decided to sing about the American author Edgar Allan Poe, who passed away in 1849. Their song “Who the Hell Is Edgar” was co-produced by Pele Loriano, a Swiss producer. He has previously been involved with several Eurovision songs, including “Sister”, “Run With The Lions”, “She Got Me” and “Bigger Than Us”. The other credited name on Genius is Slovakian musician Rony Janeček. The video clip of the Austrian entry was shot in Czechia.
Today, Daily Magazine gets straight to Austria and meets lovely Teya & Salena for a new exclusive interview dedicated to the entire phenomenon Eurovision Song Contest 2023.
What does the Eurovision competition really mean to you?
It’s a childhood dream. We both fell in love with Eurovision and what it stands for when we saw Serbia win in 2007. It meant that you could make it no matter where you come from, what you look like, who you love and what language you speak.
What defines you as an artist? And how can you describe yourself in 3 Eurovision songs?
What defines us the most is that we have so much fun together.
If we would have to describe it it would be:
We are our 7-year-old selves biggest HEROES right now.
Whenever we are together it’s pure EUPHORIA.
And we hope that we will RISE LIKE A PHOENIX.
What are your best daily motivations as an artist in ESC?
Our best motivations are facetime calls in the morning where we just scream „What the hell is even happening?!?!” We’re just very grateful and everything feels unreal.
What is the story and the message of your song and how much do you find yourself in the song?
The song embodies our experiences as female songwriters. It sometimes feels like we’re not taken as seriously as our male counterparts. It’s supposed to be satire, because, of course, we need a literal ghostwriter and can’t write the song by ourselves 😉
Also, Edgar Allan Poe was the first writer to live off of writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life. Which is something that we can definitely relate to. That’s why we wrote the bridge.
What details can you give us regarding your show on the stage?
We are in the middle of planning. But we have a great team with cool ideas, so we’re excited for that!
If you could make a duet or a revamp, what artist and song from ESC would you choose and what would you add?
Probably Molitva because it is the song that connects us the most. We would love to honor it by doing a cover.

What song of the other chosen do you like the most?
We love a lot of them! Norway or Czech Republic for example.
Why should people vote for you in Eurovision Song Contest?
They should vote for us only if they like us and most importantly the song. There are so many great artists and songs at Eurovision, it’s definitely not easy to choose who to support. But we hope we can at least bring some good vibes!
What will be next after Eurovision?
We’re very open. I think we want to see how everything plays out. We’re definitely going to release new music but we’re not set on whether it will be solo or together. We’re just having fun and we’ll for sure continue to do so.
