The Busker is a Maltese indie pop band founded in 2012. The band consists of David „Dav.Jr” Meilak, Jean Paul Borg, and Sean Meachen. They are set to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with the song „Dance (Our Own Party)„.
The group draws inspiration from 1960s pop bands such as The Beatles and The Beach Boys. They started posting covers and original music on YouTube. Their debut album, „Telegram”, was released in 2017, followed by „Ladies and Gentlemen” the following year.
In November 2022, The Busker was confirmed to be among the 40 participants in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2023, a festival used to select the Maltese representative in the annual Eurovision Song Contest. Their competing song, „Dance (Our Own Party)”, was submitted the following month. After qualifying first from the quarter-finals and then the semi-finals of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, on 11 February 2023 The Busker performed in the final, where they won with the combined support of the judging and televoting.
And today, The Busker takes a trip to Romania, to Daily Magazine, and from here, to the entire Europe with a new exclusive interview dedicated to the entire ESC 2023 phenomenon.
What does the Eurovision competition really mean to you?
Eurovision has always been the biggest music festival for us in Malta. Growing up it marked the most exciting and captivating period of the year. Friends and families do gather to watch Malta Eurovision Song Contest and then again to watch Eurovision.
Being the little ambitious musicians we always dreamt of taking on that stage, little did we know that we do get to do so!
Being the small island which is Malta, opportunities in music are fairly limited. Where globally musicians struggle to find a career, Malta mirrors that struggle where most often musicians tend to drop music and move their focus elsewhere.
For us, Eurovision is the chance for us to assert ourselves and congratulate ourselves for never giving up on our dream, and for proving to ourselves that hard work and passion does pay off !
What defines you as an artist? And how can you describe yourselves in 3 Eurovision songs?
As artists, we definitely are daring. We never conformed and always did things our way. We always made sure to stay true to our art and not try and change what we felt was right to try and gain more attention. Even though the context is surely different, we are happy to be representing ourselves and for people to finally see us as musicians, as the artists we have always worked on becoming. Always believing in the fairytale and finally coming down to earth. So therefore ;
– Rise Like a Phoenix – Conchita Wurst
– Fairytale – Alexander Rybak
– Space Man – Sam Ryder
What are your best daily motivations as an artist in ESC?
From day one we always aimed at doing our best. We work hard to push ourselves further and further beyond our time limitations. What definitely helps us stay motivated is each other. We have a very loving team who supports us and has been backing us up! As long as we make sure that each and every one of us is in good physical and mental health, the journey will be rewarding.
What is the story and the message of your song and how much do you find yourself in the song?
The story in the song is about someone feeling out of place in a party. The theme is that at times we tend to go places we don’t really feel comfortable in as to conform with societies idea of ‘fun’. The party with loud music was not the protagonist’s idea of fun, so he takes himself out of the party, finds people he is comfortable with and takes off to have their own kind of fun. The lyrics propose the question ‘ Do you want to dance?’ as a reference to wanting to dance to your own type of music, or in a setting much more familiar and less chaotic. Furthermore, it is a stance that we all enjoy ourselves in different ways and enjoy different music, and no one should be shamed off for having different preferences.
What details can you give us regarding your show on the stage?
Our show in Malta was very well received, and from the reaction videos we saw, the storyline was well read. We plan on taking our show up to Liverpool with minor changes and a better guided execution to fit the bigger stage.
If you could make a duet or a revamp, what artist and song from ESC would you choose and what would you add?
For this question we have to pick someone local, and we choose Destiny. Her song Je me Casse is such a great tune that we would definitely love to make a duet with her! She got the saxophone in her song as well, so I think we would definitely fit in! 🙂
What song of the other chosen do you like the most?
We have to answer this separately,
Dav.Jr – Burning Daylight – Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper – Netherlands
Jean Paul – Samo mi se spava – Luke Black
Sean – Unicorn – Noel Kirel
Why should people vote for you in Eurovision Song Contest?
Well, first and foremost we believe people should really vote for the song they love most. Eurovision has always been a contest of representation, so if our song speaks to anyone and feel we can represent them, their vote will mean a lot.
What will be next after Eurovision?
This year has been one big surprise after the next, so we plan to take things step by step. Surely once things calm down, our priority will be as has always been, to write, record and release more music!
For the end, share a message to all your European fans and to Daily Magazine readers!
